TWP 500 SERIES: BEST WOOD PENETRATION

TWP 500 Series is designed especially for distressed or older wood. Checking, cupping, curling, cracking, organic growth and weathering are all signs of wood in trouble.  TWP 500 Series not only has several kinds of penetrating oils, but also has the same resin-locking features that make the TWP products one-of-a-kind for wood preservation.

This resin-locking feature makes it possible for the fungicides and mildewcides to stay fastened in and onto the wood fibers as the penetrating oils carry them into the body of the wood.

Described by the chemist as having the ability to “re-bulk” the wood fibers, TWP 500 Series actually filters into cracks and weather-checked areas, fills them up, and them stays there. (This may take more than one application on very old or weather-checked wood.) Moisture is then prevented from going into the wood to start the swelling and shrinking cycle. This is what damages wood so rapidly, once it starts.

The Cedar Guild has worked extensively with this product. A combination of products could be used for best results on some surfaces and for some exposure conditions.  Ask us about this.

Before cleaning or doing any application, wear safety glasses and long gloves.

PRE-APPLICATION CLEANING FOR OLD WOOD: Before applying cleaners or pain, rinse down all plants and landscape areas, and then cover with plastic drapes or drop cloths. First, sprinkle a few drops of water on the surface. If the water beads up, the surface will have to be stripped. Second, put some TWP onto a test area that will not show, to see if it will absorb into the wood. If it is not absorbed, the surface must be stripped. In any event, the surface must be cleaned before it can be protected. Flood with plenty of water to be sure all cleaner is removed. Remove plastic covers from landscape as soon as possible and rinse plants off again.

UNTREATED OLDER WOOD: Very old, softened wood must not be restored to “like new” color by cleaning or power washing as this removes too much of the wood fiber. The age of the wood determines the cleaning techniques. Wood that is gray or black from mildew or fungus growths must be cleaned. After proper cleaning, treat with TWP 500 Series to give it new life and a rich wood-tone color. Old shakes and shingles can be treated the same way. If all the gray from UV damage cannot be removed, plan on using a darker pigment color. However, care must be used in dealing with old roofs. (Suggested reading: “How to Double the Life of Your Roof” available from the Carey Farm, USD $15.00 PPD.)

TREATED OLD WOOD: Wood surfaces must be porous to allow TWP 500 Series to penetrate into the body of the wood. Old coatings must be removed, as most of the TWP 500 Series products are fully transparent. TWP 500 will not cure unless it can penetrate into the wood. Unclean or gray areas will show through as blotchy spots.

BLACK OR WATER MARKS: Yard sprinklers that constantly spray wood surfaces leave salt stains. These must be removed. Iron rust stains, usually black in color, need to be removed.

NEW WOOD: The grain of the wood must be open before the TWP 500 Series can go into the wood. Pre-treat new shake roofs; best is to soak the wood with water several times and let it dry 48 hours after the last soaking before applying protection. New shingles do not need to be pretreated because the sawn surfaces readily accept TWP 500 Series, which gives you immediate protection. Save time and money! Put TWP 500 Series on while the scaffolding is still in place.

DISCOLORED AREAS: Water stains and black rust stains must be removed. Dissolved powered dishwashing detergent and a scrub brush usually work. In any case, with all products mentioned, safety protection, goggles and gloves must be used. TWP 500 Series will not eliminate the possible of recurring rust stains, but there are several ways this problem can be helped. The Cedar Guild will supply you with this information upon request.

APPLICATION: Use an airless sprayer, conventional garden sprayer or brush, roller and/or pad. Airless sprayers that deliver ½ to 1-1/2 gal/min. are most commonly used. Pick up and spread out with a brush or pad any material that has not been absorbed within 30 minutes. Excess oil can be wiped off with paint thinner on an absorbent towel. TWP 500 Series usually makes its final color shift in 1 – 6 weeks depending on temperature and condition of wood.

SPREAD RATE: Mill planed new wood: 400 – 500sq. ft./gal. Rough sawn siding: 200 –300 sq. ft./gal. Old wood and old shakes and shingles:  100 – 160 sq. ft./gal. Siding and fences: Apply two coats on aged wood and three coats for extremely aged surfaces. Allow 36 hrs. between coats, except on decks when you must wait 30 days for a second coat. (Please ask for additional information if you intend to use TWP 500 Series on decks.)

DRY TIME: Overnight, depending on temperature and humidity.

THIINNING AND CLEANING UP: Use mineral spirits or a cleaning solvent. On glass remove excess material with mineral spirit and clean with sudsy ammonia. Do this within 24 hours to prevent hard work.

ADDED NOTES: TWP 500 Series has so much penetrating oil, it gradually may pull the coloring pigments on the surface into the body of the wood where you can’t see them. That does not mean that the TWP is gone, it just shows that you need to apply more TWP. Several combinations can be used for retaining color. If you want a more lasting color, please call for specific information tailored to your project.

PRODUCT SELECTION

TWP 500 Clear: Available as a blending base or sealer, to be followed by tinted top coat. Not recommended for use alone as it has little UV blockers or absorbers. Wood cells under the finish will turn gray indicating wood damage is occurring as sun continues to destroy wood fibers.

TWP 501 Cedartone: Maintains a natural reddish brown cedar color for all cedar uses.

TWP 502 Redwood: Designed to match the color of heart redwood or tank stock. For older bleached redwood or wood with a greater amount of sapwood, use Cedartone 501 or California Redwood 511.

TWP 503 Dark Oak: Warm medium brown with good UV blockers.

TWP 504 Black Walnut: Rich darker black-brown. Great UV shield.

TWP 511 California Redwood: For lighter redwood or for aged cedar where red highlights are wanted.

TWP 515 Light Cedar: Translucent, this has natural brownish yellow tones.

SPECIAL COLOR ADDITIVE CC-13: Lightens badly aged or very dark wood by lightening it to a more yellowish brown. Product has high stain hiding abilities.  (Added at the plant on request)
