TWP 200
TWP® 200 HEAVY DUTY
SERIES
TWP SHAKE AND SHINGLE 200 H. D. SERIES is a unique multi-layered
coating designed specifically for wood roofing. Through use of a
proprietary resin bonding system, the wood protectorants, including
active copper, are locked
into the wood. This, coupled with the high paraffinic oil content
and a tinted UV barrier, gives multiple protection to the shake or
shingle roof. The long lasting pigments found in TWP SHAKE AND
SHINGLE 200 H. D. SERIES assures the user of consistent color for
the life of the product. As the TWP 200 H. D. Series dries and
cures, the darker colored oils continue to migrate into the wood.
Curing may take 30 days to 6 months, depending on the temperature.
The pigment stays on the surface, forming a protective ultraviolet
(UV) barrier. One application can last 5 – 7+ years. (This may be
reduced in areas of more sun and higher temperatures.)
FOUR STEP PROTECTION
THIS IS HOW IT WORKS
1. On a prepared surface, apply the TWP 200 H. D.
2. The paraffinic oil begins to penetrate immediately. The oil holds
the UV barrier and all the resins, pigments and chemicals in place.
The coating is very dark in color upon application. Time and heat
from the sun begin the job of helping the oil penetrate further into
the wood. Penetration may take 3 days to 3 months, depending on
temperature, with the color lightening as the oil is absorbed.
3. The penetrating oil, carrying protectorants and resins seeps into
and around weathered openings in the wood cells. This fills in old
surface cracks and checks. Resins bond to and seal the surface
openings, leaving no space for water or organic growths to enter the
wood.
4. During the curing process, the oil migrates further into the wood
and replaces the lost natural oils and resins. This unique
combination of oil, protectorants and resins provide the 5 – 7 +
year protection that makes TWP Shake And Shingle the industry leader
in wood coatings.
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
TWP SHAKE AND SHINGLE 200 H. D. gives complete protection against
moisture and sunlight, which are the greatest enemies of any wood
surface. The extremely high solids (92 – 97%) form a barrier that
repels water and blocks sunlight. TWP Shake and Shingle increases
the life expectancy of wood roofing products by many years. The
“free” oils fill in the spaces in the wood that open up through the
aging process. This closes off any openings for destructive growths,
such as moss or algae. The “waxy” finish left by the paraffinic oil
allows the roof to be washed and cleaned off much easier.
TWP Shake and Shingle is the #1 rated and preferred roof treatment
product in the United States. Actual field weatherization tests at
Texas A & M plus other comparative studies have shown Radcon based
TWP Shake and Shingle to have the longest life and give better
protection than any other product on the market today. It is user
friendly and VOC compliant to make TWP environmentally safe.
SURFACE PREPARATION
Wet down landscape plants before tarping and again after removing
tarps. All wood must have debris and organic growth cleaned off by
power washing. To prevent damage, a power washer should be used by
an experienced person. It is important to take time to thoroughly
clean out the keyway (or slot) between individual shingles or
shakes. Care must be used to clean off butt ends of shakes and
shingles. On some older roofs, power washing may not be wise.
Instead, use a good cleaner, like TSP plus household bleach and a
stiff bristled broom. This solution makes the removal of most
organic growths easy. Flush the surface thoroughly with water from a
garden hose. Continue washing until foaming stops. Wash down
gutters. Make roof repairs as needed. For individual shake or
shingle repairs & a power washing guide, consult the manual, “Double
the Life of Your Roof” available for (USD $15.00 PPD., (check payable to
The Carey Farm -
order form) New wood should be treated as soon as it is
installed. Wetting the wood and letting it dry several times will
lift wood fibers on new shakes. This process allows the fibers to
absorb more protectorants. Treating new wood without this step will
not allow maximum protection, but it will put enough protection onto
the wood to prevent damage from starting. (Shingles don’t need
wetting because the wood cells are sawn open.) To blend in new wood
repairs, use FSC’s Aging Agent. This product
will help you gray the new wood to match the old. Using a heavier
pigmented darker color will also blend in repairs.
APPLICATION: NOTE: Before applying TWP 200 Series to
any surface, test the area by pouring or sprinkling a small amount
of water on the area to be treated. If the water beads up like on a
waxed car, the wood will not absorb the TWP. Ask us about strippers
to clean the surface. TWP can be applied after wood is dry for
48 hours. ½ to 1-1/2 gal/min. is the most common spray rate for TWP
application. Low pressure is necessary to prevent overspray or
misting. Put the TWP on until the wood won’t soak up any more. Wipe
off overspray immediately. Vegetation, skylights, adjacent
structures (like dormers) need to be tarped or masked. Prevent spray
from entering any water source. Use O.S.H.A approved respirator,
goggles and gloves.
SPREAD RATE: 1 gallon will cover 100 – 150 sq. ft. of old
wood and 200 – 300 sq. ft. old new wood.
CLEAN UP: Use mineral spirits (paint thinner) for equipment
clean up and for wiping off overspray on gutters or other areas. As
with all paints, waste disposal must be done at appropriate state or
city disposal sites.
IN ORDER TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO WATER LIFE, DO NOT CONTAMINATE
GROUND WATER OR OPEN WATER. USE PERSONNEL AND PROPERTY PROTECTION AS
OUTLINED IN MSDS SHEETS. USER ACCEPTS RESPONSIBILITY FOR USE,
DISPOSAL OF WASTE AND EMPTY CONTAINERS AS OUTLINED BY EXISTING
GOVERNMENTAL STATUTES.
PRODUCT SELECTION
200 H. D. CLEAR:
Not recommended because it has no UV blockers or absorbers. Wood
cells under the finish will turn gray indicating wood damage is
still occurring because sun continues to destroy the fibers. This is
true of any company’s clear product.
201 H. D. CEDARTONE: Recommended for maintaining natural
cedar color when the roof is new. On older wood it works well if the
wood can be cleaned to a nearly new appearance, or where very few
roof repairs are needed. It has reddish brown color tones.
202 H. D. REDWOOD: Dark reddish brown. More pigment that
Cedartone.
203 H. D. CEDARTONE GOLD: Identical to 201 H. D. but has
additional pigment. It works best to blend in wood colors on major
repairs or remodeling projects. If the roof is still grayish after
cleaning, the extra pigment creates a more immediate color change to
resemble new wood.
205 H. D. CALIFORNIA CEDAR: This is the lightest pigmented
TWP product. It has yellowish brown color tones.
206 RUSSET BROWN: A brown shade with red tones, it provides
more uniform color coverage on unevenly colored surfaces. It does
not have the yellowish tones that may develop on the 203 H. D.
207 BUTTERNUT BROWN: A deeper brown with fewer red tones. Has
the same high hiding characteristics of the 203 H. D. but is a warm
medium dark brown.
210 H. D. SLATE GRAY: Silvery gray semi-transparent color
gives new wood an immediate “aged” look, yet gives full protection.
It is excellent for retaining the gray look after cleaning. This is
a top seller on the East Coast for coating both white and western
red cedar.
