FSC AGING AGENT

To give new wood the look of aged wood

Aging Agent is a dry powder which, when added to water, will chemically darken or gray many different types of wood.** The extent of darkening or graying is determined by the strength of the solution you use.

This is not a bleaching solution.  If you wish to lighten the wood you will need to use a different type of product.  Household bleach is not recommended for use as a wood bleach.

Product use instructions: Start with 2-oz. dry Aging Agent to one gallon of warm water for medium aging. Test a scrap of the actual wood you are going to use on the project. Dip or soak the wood for 15 seconds. If this comes out too dark, reduce the amount of Aging Agent to 1-oz. per gallon. If this is too light, use 3-oz. powder in one gallon and continue increasing the powder until you get the desired darkness.

Normally, the wood is left in the solution for 10 – 30 seconds then stacked in such a way that maximum drying occurs. The wood can be coated with a water-based coating in 24 hours. For an oil-based coating, it must dry for 48 hours.

The recommended coating: TWP 200 Series or TWP 500 Series for maximum control for splitting, cracking, checking and cupping. For decks, use TWP 500 for a matte finish. TWP 200 series is not normally recommended for use on decks.  TWP 300 Ultra Series is recommended if you want a satin or gloss finish. Don’t forget, if you use a clear finish, aging by ultra-violet light will occur under the coating.

Make finished samples of the finished product, with the finish you want;, to be sure this is the look you want. Different wood species will darken differently. Light and dark tints may accentuate the depth and darkness you get with the Aging Agent. Allow the coated sample to age 7 days before making your final decision.

Disposal: May be disposed of by diluting thoroughly and putting down the kitchen sink.

** Aging Agent will not darken Alaskan Yellow Cedar. Southern Yellow Pine may also not respond to this treatment. In both of these cases, the wood either becomes greenish in color or has an undesirable iridescent look.  For information, please contact the Cedar Guild.
